چکیده
Abstract During the past few years, number of regional and national assessments groundwater quality in regard to saltwater intrusion coastal aquifers has increased steadily. However, most international literature on is focused plains with unconsolidated material. Case studies, modelling approaches parameter studies dealing those systems are abundant. While hydrogeology fractured rock been intensively studied both studies—mainly relation deep-laying crystalline bedrock as potential waste repositories—case shallow rocks still an exception. This review summarizes actual knowledge rock. In combination short overviews processes intrusion, flow genesis these systems, highlights importance fracture its specific characteristics. Fracture properties a direct consequence geological history well current situation area. A holistic assessment water areas hosting therefore requires different order investigate impact through system.

Infiltration into fractured bedrock
[1] One potential consequence of global climate change and rapid changes in land use is an increased risk of flooding. Proper understanding of floodwater infiltration thus becomes a crucial component of our preparedness to meet the environmental challenges of projected climate change. In this paper, we present the results of a long-term infiltration experiment performed on fractured ash flow tu...
متن کاملEffect of tracer buoyancy on tracer experiments conducted in fractured crystalline bedrock
[1] Tracer buoyancy has been shown to influence breakthrough from two-well tracer experiments conducted in porous media. Two-well tracer experiments are presented from fractured crystalline bedrock, in which the specific gravity of the tracer injectate varied from 1.0002 to 1.0133. Under the forced hydraulic conditions imposed, no difference in breakthrough was noted for the three experiments. ...
متن کاملWeathering and erosion of fractured bedrock systems
We explore the contribution of fractures (joints) in controlling the rate of weathering advance for a low-porosity rock by using methods of homogenization to create averaged weathering equations. The rate of advance of the weathering front can be expressed as the same rate observed in non-fractured media (or in an individual block) divided by the volume fraction of nonfractured blocks in the fr...
متن کاملNatural attenuation of trichloroethylene in fractured shale bedrock.
This paper describes one of the first well-documented field examples of natural attenuation of trichloroethylene (TCE) in groundwater in a fractured shale bedrock. The study was carried out adjacent to a former waste burial site in Waste Area Grouping 5 (WAG5) on the Oak Ridge Reservation, Oak Ridge, TN. A contaminant plume containing TCE and its daughter products were detected downgradient fro...
متن کاملDistinguishing Advection, Dispersion, and Diffusion in Fractured Bedrock
Mass spreading of non-reactive tracers in fractured bedrock can be described by a combination of molecular diffusion, hydrodynamic dispersion, and heterogeneous advection. These spreading mechanisms are fundamentally different in their behavior and, therefore, must be measured separately for reliable predictions of transport to be made. To separate the influence of these mechanisms, to the exte...
